Samsung SGH-F480 Firmware Flashing
I was able to flash my Samsung SGH-F480 to a firmware used for the Hugo Boss version recently, and here is sort of a guide on how to flash the unit.
‘Why Flash to Another Firmware’
Some might wonder why it is necessary to flash to another firmware, and there are a couple of good reasons for this. First would be to get rid of bugs found on earlier firmware versions, enabling the phone to function better.
Another would be to get new features in the latest firmware versions. The firmware on my phone, for example, was a version released July 2008. The newest firmware has more features to the ones I have, like five more widgets, including one that will allow getting of additional widgets; Three more standby wallpapers; Newer built in applications like Accuweather, etc.
And yet another reason, like in my case, is to get the firmware with better aesthetics, like a cooler startup screen and sound, option for black or white menu icons and backgrounds, etc.
Custom firmwares also have started to come up, which combines the best features from other features. Not that many yet, but am sure even better ones will come up that will have customized startup screens / sounds, and more features.
Firmware flashing is not for everyone, of course. There is the real risk of bricking the phone for one reason or another. But if you are successful, the rewards are great. Worst case, you can always bring the unit to the official service center which can (hopefully) fix your bricked phone if you are unable to solve it.
‘Flashing Problems’
I did have problems flashing the phone initially. I inadvertently forgot to install new boot files, so the phone would only start up to 75%, then freeze.
I removed the battery to turn off the phone, then went to the bootloader screen again (which thankfully loaded), reflashed correctly, but still had the same problem.
I removed the battery again, then restarted the phone. Same problem. One more time, removed battery and restarted ….. and the phone loaded without a problem.
Moral of the story: If you have problems with flashing your phone, keep trying to solve it on your own, because you have no choice and there’s nothing worst that can be done on the unit until you bring it to the service center.
‘Default Phone Language’
Another problem I encountered, was the fact that the default language of the new firmware I flashed to was different from English! In such cases, simply press “Menu”, go to “Settings”, count four steps down then go in, press on the first selection, then press on the first selection again, and look for the word “English”, and select.
‘Firmware Flashing Preparation’
First, you might want to know what firmware version you currently have. Here is a guide on how to do it:

Second, you need to install the “Samsung PC Studio” in order for the flashing program to recognize the phone (something the damn guides didn’t mention, and which I had to find out for myself). The software has the drivers that will be installed on your PC, and thus enable other softwares to connect to your phone.
Here is where to get the latest version of the “Samsung PC Studio”:

‘Firmware Versions’
Here is an excellent forum thread which tracks the features of a couple of firmwares for the SGH-F480:

I suggest reviewing the feedbacks carefully, and getting the ones you like. I would’ve wanted a firmware with the Hugo Boss startup features and menus, AND the latest features, but none yet. It’ll turnup soon, so am just gonna wait for that.
‘Firmware Flashing Proper’
Now here is finally the guide for flashing the unit. Read the instructions carefully, and compare the screenshot carefully with the one on your software before flashing:

The whole flashing process should take no more than five minutes, more if you encounter errors and problems like I did above. At any rate, if things turn out smoothly, then about five minutes is all that it will take.

Hi. Try looking for a Hugo Boss firmware in this link: http://67.228.206.52/vbb/index.php
If not, then just google it. I haven’t been using my F480 lately, so I’m not that up to date about it anymore.
As for firmwares ….. I think any firmware can be used in any country, as long as your unit is open line, and as long as you are able to read the default language in it. I have flashed firmwares from other countries in my F480, and it worked fine.
