My Apple iPhone 3G 8GB Review Part Two

‘Excellent Screen’
The iPhone’s screen not only is bigger, but I feel much better than that of the 5800. Kinda subjective, but I did notice outright that avatar pics of friends I took on the 5800 and transferred to the iPhone just looked so much better. Not only were they larger, but looked sharper, and the colors more defined. This is true especially with cartoon images, they just look so much better on the unit.

‘Lack of Celphone Connectivity’
I think everyone knows by now the iPhone’s problem with MMS and Bluetooth. Here’s a conversation I had recently that illustrates the problem:

A friend of mine wanted to send a picture to my from her celphone. I told her, ‘Sorry, alang MMS ang celphone ko’ (sorry, my celphone has no MMS).

‘Ganun? Sige, Bluetooth na lang’ (Really? Okay, let’s just use Bluetooth instead)

‘Um, er …..’

We tried, and a Nokia celphone will detect the iPhone’s BT. However, it won’t be able to send files to it.

The only way one can transfer pics from one phone to the iPhone, would be to save the pic to iTunes, then sync the pic into the iPhone. Mighty inconvenient, to say the least.

‘SIM Contacts’
Copying contacts from your SIM is a cinch. So damn easy, there’s a button somewhere in the Settings menu that says something like, “Import SIM Contacts”. Just click the button, and voila, all SIM contacts are imported into the unit.

And a smart one, too, because the unit recognizes duplicates, and downloads only those contacts that are not yet in the celphone.

So you now start using your phone, and saving some new contacts. Wait, I need to use another phone, so how do I save my new contacts on the phone to the SIM?

And the iPhone hits another wall.

‘iPhone QA’
What I would really like to do, is know the name of the person handling the Quality Assurance for the iPhone’s firmware, so I can try to put a pox on him.

I can’t understand, how his department could allow such basic phone functions to be excluded from an otherwise excellent phone?

My theory, is that they were on a deadline, and just couldn’t hack it. And they probably thought that whatever shortcoming the phone has, the users will eventually fix using third party software.

‘Other Problems’
I haven’t really encountered other known iPhone problems yet, like the lack of ability to forward messages, or copy and paste texts. I guess my type of usage just has not yet gotten around to encountering the problem.

But, due to the type of problems I have encountered, am a bit eager to jailbreak the unit and hopefully improve its functionality.

‘iPhone Tips and Tricks’
Before I Jailbreak the phone and leave the secure world of Apple’s stock firmware, here are some of the better resources I found on the internet about tips and tricks for the iPhone:
